Congregation L’Dor V’Dor is a warm and vibrant synagogue serving Long Island’s North Shore. It offers a destination where families can gather together to pray and learn, celebrate Shabbat and holidays and mark the rhythms of their lives. It is an intimate community committed to rekindling the joy of Jewish living and renewing the teachings of Torah.

Congregation L’Dor V’Dor is a Reform synagogue, combining ancient teachings with contemporary values. We strive towards prayer that is inspiring and participatory, thoughtful and meaningful, and of course filled with music and song.

Our congregation’s spiritual leader is Rabbi Steven Moskowitz.  Rabbi Moskowitz is at the center of our congregation and began his tenure here in September 1999.  After his ordination from Hebrew Union College he taught and led the outreach programs at Manhattan’s 92nd Street Y.  Every summer he travels to Jerusalem to study at the Shalom Hartman Institute where he serves as a senior rabbinic fellow.  He values teaching and writing and standing by our congregants’ sides at their most joyous moments and even their most difficult.

We are led in song and prayer by our gifted cantorial soloist Talya Smilowitz.  Cantor Smilowitz began her years here in June 2009.  She was trained at The Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music.  She regularly performs in multiple venues, including Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall and the Broadway stage.  Our congregants find her voice magical and transcendent, as she provide them with emotional support and spiritual connection.

Our synagogue is blessed by the devotion of many lay leaders including our president, Marty Neidell, vice president Bruce Rebold, secretary Edra Tepper and treasurer Bryan Drew and board of trustees Ben Braunstein, Michael Falkove, Lynda Gerber, Marcia Glick, Nancy Krosser, Andrew Levine, Michael Reisman, Nancy Rosenberg, Bonnie Schinagle, Susanne Seperson, Oren Simon, Jonathan Siskind, Lisa Weiner, Kathy Weiss, Brenda Wilensky and past president Brian Land.

We invite you to join our community and welcome you to become part of something meaningful and inspiring.

School

Our Religious School program is built on the philosophy of Rabbi Yehudah HaNasi, "Only learning that is enjoyed is learned well." Our enthusiastic teachers not only make sure our students learn Hebrew and Jewish traditions, but enjoy their learning.

Our school is led by our principal, Jen Armus.  Jen began her tenure here in July 2021. She has been involved in synagogue life for many years, first teaching at Brooklyn Heights Synagogue Preschool and then continued there as the Assistant Director for another nine years.  Her enthusiasm for Judaism and love for our students is unparalleled.

Our students also love learning from Rabbi Moskowitz and Cantor Smilowitz who also play active roles in the school.

3rd Grade meets on Mondays, 4-6 pm. 4th Grade on Thursdays at 4-6 pm.  5th Grade on Thursdays 4-6 pm.  6th Grade on Mondays 615-815 pm.  And 7th Grade on Thursdays 7-8 pm.
